Learn to Spin Yarn on a Spinning Wheel

Learn the ancient craft of turning fiber into yarn on a spinning wheel! In this hands-on workshop, experienced spinner and local fiber artist Ally will guide you through the fundamentals of wheel spinning — from understanding your wheel to plying your first yarn.

Pre-requisite: You must be comfortable spinning yarn on a drop spindle before taking this class.

What You’ll Learn

• The parts of a spinning wheel and how they work together
• How to spin singles and ply on a wheel
• S twist vs. Z twist and when to use each
• Using a lazy kate for plying

By the end of class, you’ll walk away with a sample mini skein of yarn you made yourself.

Class Details

• One 2-hour session
• Class size: Limited to 2 students — plenty of one-on-one guidance, and each student gets their own wheel
• Use a shop spinning wheel or bring your own

Materials Needed

• None! You’re welcome to bring your own spinning wheel if you have one.

About the Teacher

Ally has been spinning for over 15 years and is an avid knitter and dyer. A beloved member of the local fiber community, she’s passionate about helping others discover the joy of making yarn by hand.
